Brian J. Dlouhy, MD, joined the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics and Stead Family Children's Hospital after graduating from the New York University School of Medicine and completing his neurosurgery residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. During his residency, he completed a clinical and research fellowship in pediatric and adult epilepsy at the University of Iowa. After finishing his residency, he completed an endoscopic and minimally invasive fellowship in Sydney, Australia followed by a pediatric neurosurgery fellowship at St Louis Children’s Hospital and Washington University in St. Louis.
Dr. Dlouhy treats all pediatric neurosurgical disorders but specializes in the treatment of Chiari, complex Chiari, disorders of the craniovertebral junction (CVJ), and pediatric epilepsy. He uses endoscopic and minimally invasive techniques in the treatment of all neurosurgical disorders in children and adults.
In addition to his clinical activities, Dr. Dlouhy leads a research lab. He utilizes basic and translational applications to study epilepsy, sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP), and development of human brain function. The goal of this research is to develop innovative treatment strategies for epilepsy, prevention of SUDEP, and treatment of all types of brain injury including TBI and stroke.
