Chiari and CVJ Disorders
Chiari malformations and disorders of the craniovertebral junction (CVJ) are not well understood from a pathophysiological, genetics, or molecular standpoint. Therefore, Dr. Dlouhy studies the large number of patients treated for Chiari and CVJ disorders at the University of Iowa.
Child Brain Development
Associated with understanding epilepsy causes in children, Dr. Dlouhy also focuses on understanding the development of normal human brain function (speech, language, motor, emotional processing). Understanding the development of the child's brain may allow us to better understand autism, psychiatric disorders and potentially learn about plasticity of the brain in ways to treat people with strokes and brain injury.
Research
Epilepsy and SUDEP
One of Dr. Dlouhy's main research focuses is understanding the cause of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP), how breathing is inhibited during seizures to cause SUDEP, and how epilepsy affects child brain development. Click here to learn about Dr. Dlouhy's latest research on SUDEP.
